Gondola Accident Today

An Italian friend just told me about a gondola / vaporetto accident near the Rialto Bridge today. A vaporetto was docking and apparently didn’t see a gondola carrying a German family of five. The father was crushed to death between the two boats, and his three-year-old daughter had injuries to her cheek and head. Here are some details:

The Italian papers are releasing the name of the father who was killed, though the English language papers are not. I also saw a FB post from one of my gondolier friends who was in a nearby boat. He said an official yelled at him as if he were somehow at fault just for wearing his gondolier uniform. The mayor of Venice has already formed a committee to investigate the city’s crowded waterways.

Whenever I’m with friends in Venice, someone inevitably asks, “Don’t the boats ever run into each other?” Yes, they do, though it’s really pretty rare. Another article said that the last times people were thrown from gondolas due to large motorboat wakes were in 2011 and 2004.

Sad but probably ievitable. Glad there were no more fatalities but I feel for the poor family who has lost its father.

    Sorry – “inevitable”
