Random Venice Journal Entry #2

Remember this image:

Piazza San Marco

dusk has just fallen

and there’s only the slightest hint that there was light in the sky

maybe a skant fifteen minutes ago.

In front of the Campanile entrance

is a group of Greeks

some sitting

and eight of them dancing

arms linking them in an opened circle

arms over shoulders or at waists

while the whole group–

sitters and dancers–

sings

as the dancers circle and hop

in a repeating fluid movement

their voices haunted with joy

their movement a proclamation of joy

their dance slow and constant

the circle rocking like a pendulum

feet synchronized to step

forward and back

one knee raised then a foot stamped flat

their voices rising and falling

joyful smiles cascading

from their faces,

covering the ground

and the crowd that has gathered

until some in the crowd

must sing

and others must dance too

so they link into that opened circle

the dancers and the sitters and the

watchers all cheer

to welcome more into the dance

because that’s where

we all want to be at that moment

to make that moment stretch

into one that will become

immortal

that night we danced in front

of the Campanile in the

Piazza San Marco just after

the sun went to bed.

There are always magical things happening in St. Mark’s square. You never know who or what you will discover.

You sketched a vivid image, thank you! I wish I could have been there, either clapping or dancing.
