The Jesus-Gondola Connection

“Do Not Play Jesus — Take a Gondola”

I’m not sure where I came across this line–maybe Venetian graffiti, maybe and overheard conversation. I had scribbled it on a receipt and then found it today while cleaning.

Here are some Angeli in Gondola, from a Carnevale trip some years ago. Hi Margot and Rachel! Doesn’t look like February, huh?

I wonder how often in Venetian history some one (probably drunk) has tried the “walk on water” trick. Enough, I would think, for this graffiti to exist.

  2. peter maher says:

The allusion is to Matthew gospel – Jesus bids Peter to get out of his boat and walk to him on the water. – Thanks to speed & specially-designed feet, the basilisk lizard can run on water… people call it the “Jesus Christ Lizard.” … National Geographic video.
