Oh, Those Clowns!

My bookclub recently read The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry (and unanimously loved it). In the book, some Murano glass clowns figure rather importantly. I’m in Venice right now, and as I was walking through the Mercerie (one of the shopping districts near Piazza San Marco), I passed these guys.

And their friends…

And some musicians…

Plus the thief…

As well as the grand master of them all….

In the book, the protagonist’s boss has a collection of these glass clowns, which he values very highly. They get broken and he goes ballistic. I won’t say more than that (don’t worry, this information isn’t really a spoiler). So now, when you read the book, you can picture what Harold is talking about.

    Thanks! These are truly kitschy.

There is a larger group of these “clowns” to be found at the glass factories on Murano.
