What Gondoliers Do When No One Is Watching

Gondola sneaking up on me….

Last summer I visited the Cloister of Sant’Apollonia, situated behind Basilica San Marco on the Canonica canal. I’ll post a separate blog about what I saw inside the cloister. But I couldn’t resist watching the gondoliers for a while from the window of the second floor. I never get tired of watching gondolas go by! Here’s a little gondola action for those of you far from Venice pining for gondolas.

30 Seconds of Gondolas

Some tourists noticed me as I watched them, and I had one gondolier wave and shout out, “Ciao, bella!” But in those moments that they didn’t see me, I saw one…

checking his telefonino

changing his hair color….

What is up with his two-tone hair?

and showing off his pirate costume.

What else have you seen gondoliers doing when they thought no one was looking? Please write in and share your stories.
